BCWM Curriculum
All violin group classes are conducted in an after-school program in the Bowling Green High School Auditorium.
The classes are conducted in the order:
Warm-up
Review of previous skills
Reinforcement of current pieces
Preview of future material
Performance of solos that are ready
In addition to playing the violin, students in BCWM learn basic music theory, including ear-training and note-reading.
The program uses a repertoire sequence based on the work of Paul Rolland, Dr. Shinichi Suzuki, and Professor Mimi Zweig. We teach all the pieces by rote (listening only) until the students are comfortable with the basic set-up of playing the violin, usually by the second year of their studies. Because our students come from different countries, our teachers arrange music from those countries in order to:
Bring something familiar to their learning
Bridge their world and ours
Teach and learn from each other
We arrange the pieces in keys suited to their level, using familiar finger patterns.
